I%26#39;m going to New York in August with my two kids (16 year old boy and 14 year old girl). Any recommendations for a show we might all enjoy? I%26#39;ve heard good things about Spring Awakening and Boeing Boeing but I%26#39;m wondering how ';adult'; these shows are?
Broadway show for teens
My 15 year old son loved Spamalot.
Broadway show for teens
I can%26#39;t speak for Boeing Boeing, but Spring Awakening is amazing. It deals with adult themes but honestly nothing that your kids won%26#39;t already have been exposed to. Its a mature musical, but done very tastefully!!!
If you have any specific questions about Spring Awakening or anything else Broadway related, feel free to PM me! :)

I don%26#39;t know how to PM! I was thinking about Spamalot also because they have standing room tickets, although I%26#39;m not sure we could really bear to stand after walking around the city for hours. From what I%26#39;ve heard about Spring Awakening my kids would probably love it, but how sexual is it? I talk about this stuff with them, but I%26#39;m not sure I want to see it on stage!
I PM%26#39;d you!
Annie: I feel the same way about Spring Awakening. I%26#39;m not sure I will be comfortable watching it with my almost 15 year old daughter. I prefer to wait a couple more years.
Here are my suggestions:
1. Wicked: both teen boys and girls like this.
2. Spamalot: My son loved this musical, my daughter liked it. Very slap stick.
3. Mamma Mia: The music is very fun. The entire audience is dancing at the end.
4. Mary Poppins: I know your kids are teens and may say NO but this is classic Broadway. The story is edgier than the movie. The music is absolutely amazing! I took my kids last summer and they loved it!
5. In the Heights: I have tickets to see it this summer with my kids. It is getting rave reviews and was recently nominated for a Tony. It sounds a bit like West Side Story only more modern. My kids and I can%26#39;t wait to see it! Moms
I have a sixteen year old son and fourteen year old daughter as well. My son really isn%26#39;t into seeing shows anymore...my daughter (and my other, younger, daughter) loves them.
Her favorite is Rent, which I would highly recommend. (I%26#39;m personally not ready to see Spring Awakening while sitting next to her...lots and lots of controversial themes, one on top of the next...)
I agree with the recommendation on Mary Poppins...excellent show.
Mama Mia is also terrific; my son did see that one with us and really enjoyed it.
How about Avenue Q? It%26#39;s hilarious, and if you don%26#39;t have a problem with Spring Awakening, you probably won%26#39;t with this one either.
So many shows to choose from...I%26#39;m really so glad I live here!
Just to defend Spring Awakening, has anyone else on this board seen it?? Its not as controversial as some might think. No more than what kids might see watching television.
Think about it...
Have seen it and loved it! Saw it with our older children and our 14 and 16 year old. Our 16 Year old dancer loved it so much that she chose to compete this year with a dance to ';Mama who Bore Me.'; Winner all the way to national championships. Her dance instructor and choreographer both thanked her (and us for allowing her) a million times for the opportunity to work with that music! It%26#39;s been amazing.
I%26#39;ve seen Spring Awakening twice and if I had the money, I%26#39;d see it again, but I know a lot of parents who would not be comfortable taking their teens to see it.
To be specific about what might make parents uncomfortable about seeing ';S.A.';: there is a very funny scene about m*strbtn, which does not show any body parts, and there is a s*x scene, which shows the character%26#39;s rear end. These scenes are not thrown in gratuitously to titillate the audience (as is often done on tv and in the movies), but are consistent with the theme of the show. The show also has some bad things happen to some characters, which I don%26#39;t want to give away to spoil the plot, but don%26#39;t think they qualify as so ';controversial.';
I have to say that the times I%26#39;ve seen the show, I have not actually sat next to my daughter, so it did make it a little easier for me.
But, the teens absolutely love this show and many have seen it numerous times (guilty as charged in our family). Listen to the music first and I think the show is even better.
We saw ';in the Heights'; and that is very enjoyable. Great energy and dancing.
I also saw ';Avenue Q'; and personally thought that ';S.A.'; was a better choice for my teen. Did not take her to see ';Q.'; Humor is much more adult there, IMO.
Cast is changing for ';SA.'; The two original leads (Melchior and Wendla) are doing their last performances this weekend. The original Moritz is also gone (he won Tony), but I%26#39;ve heard his replacement is excellent.
