EWR car rental times

New reader of very helpful posts and 1st time visitor to New York so please bear with me. We are excited to get to spend a week in New York!

We are flying into EWR at 11:30 pm.(Family of 4 adults) Staying at Courtyard Marriott at LGA (inexpensive group rate makes it more than worth it.) We will need a rental car for traveling to visit friends so my question was is it safe to rent one at that time of night and drive to hotel at LGA? We will have a navigation system. Is it a very long drive? I am thinking traffic should be light. Or should we stay at a Newark hotel and rent a car in the morning?

Thank you in advance for your help and suggestions!

You have chosen a hotel with almost no easy access to public transportation. It is likely that the difficult-to -access location is what makes it so cheap: no one wants to stay there.

Where are your friends that you need a rental car to go visit them? How frequently will you be visiting y our friends? If you have a car (which is usually a bad idea when one visits NYC -- but then, most people don%26#39;t stay at LaGaurdia Airport), you may just want to keep it the whole time, so that you don%26#39;t end up being constantly stuck at the hotel. You wold then use it for getting back and forth not to Manhattan, but to the subway in Queens.

Staying at a Newark hotel doesn%26#39;t make much sense to me, either. Why don%26#39;t you want to stay at a hotel that gives you easy access to the city that you are supposed to be visiting?

Thank you GWB for your quick response.

We have friends in Boston, Philadelphia, and upstate NY. Since the price is almost the same for a rental for 3 days as it is for the weekly rate and since the hotel offers free parking, we will be keeping it for the week. Excursions to Manhattan will be by taxi or car service or the subway if we decide.

Staying in Manahttan would be great!, but that is not the only thing we are going to do and to me the $500 a night pricetag is not reasonable as opposed to the savings we will have by staying in Queens.($150/nt) It just a place to ';hang our hat'; so to speak. Maybe we can take a taxi to LGA and rent a car there the following day.
