When riding the E train to the WTC, please get off the train

If you plan on taking the E train to get there, the World Trade Center-Chambers Street station is the LAST STOP. If you want to see the WTC site, you need to disembark. If you stay on the train, it will return uptown, whence you came.

Every day, I go to work and take the E train to the WTC stop. And every day, every car has some tourists sitting there (both English-speaking and not) who don%26#39;t realize it%26#39;s the last stop, and are often startled when I tell them.

In fact, last month on my way home, there was a family arguing about something over a subway map and they ';didn%26#39;t need help, thank you.'; Sure enough, when the train doors closed and we arrived at Canal Street, the teen daughter said, ';See? We were just here!'; - accompanied by Olympic-caliber eye-rolling, expertly executed flopping down into seat, and well balanced exasperated sighing.

I%26#39;m the first one to admit that subway speaker systems leave a lot to be desired, and that conductors are not always the clearest, but - especially during the summers - conductors are pretty good about announcing ';Last Stop!'; pretty clearly.

';World Trade Center'; often sounds like ';Whirr Tray Senna'; over the speakers, and it is the stop after Canal Street.

Finally, if you hear the big ';Shhhhhh'; of air from the brakes and see everyone else get off, you should, too.

I have added subway directions to this Insider Page (Click on Things to Do on the left margin to find it), so I hope this helps.

P.S. The E train has the most breakdowns in air conditioning of the entire subway system - almost 20% of E train cars are above 78F, and some register at 88F!!

Remember - you are allowed to move to a different car if it is too hot and the a/c is broken. There is no rule or requirement to suffer and remain in a hot or smelly car.

Good info, QB. When we%26#39;ve stayed at the Milenium, we often rode the E train. I can well understand how someone could get confused. It doesn%26#39;t surprise me that the a/c breaks down a lot because the cars on that line are old.

Very good point! I think it would be a friendly act towards our visitors if the MTA were to put up a poster in each car advising passengers who are riding the E train to get to the WTC Site to use the front cars of the E train and to disembark at the last stop which is Chambers... like they do on the 1 Trains advising rider to be in the first five cars for the Staten Island Ferry.
