I went to New York at the beginning of July during the 4th of July weekend and got an excellent deal on Quikbook. I usually see specials on Travelzoo during summer time that are excellent but I can%26#39;t seem to fing great specials ever since 4th of July weekend. Are there more activities this summer in New York than usual? I was hoping that New York experts could answer this question for me.
I would have maybe gone back in August if I had found a great special like I did a month ago (134$ per night at the 6 Columbus hotel) but everything is 250$. Even Hotwire is more expensive than usual. Curiosity is therefore killing me and I was wondering why that was. I would have thought that with the high gas prices that there would have been less tourists going to NY, and everywhere else, but it seems that this is not the case.
Thanks in advance if you have an answer for me!
Hotel prices this summer???
';...why that was...';
The continued depression of the US dollar has made the US and NYC in particular an extremely CHEAP destination for all Europeans, Canadians, even Australians. August is the height of vacation time for the UK and Europe. In the past, they stayed in Europe. Now they come here.

They%26#39;re filling our ';usually empty in summer'; hotels and restaurants. The rule of supply and demand works.

You ought to be glad that you%26#39;re not gettin a room in Moscow. Take a look at this article in today%26#39;s Wall street Journal about hotel rates in Moscow. In the same artcile they list the most expensive one night hotel rates around the world. New york City ranks second with an average rate of $384 a night. Moscow was first at $540 followed by NYC ..... followed by Paris, Dubai, Milan, Stockholm, Mumbai, Banglore, Hong Kong and rounded out by London at a relatively cheap $305 dollars a night.

I LOVE NEW YORK !!!!!!!
Thanks nywhiz for that article! It may be a good thing for the New York economy but a bad thing for my addiction to New York because I won%26#39;t be able to satisfy it with those hotel prices this month..snif..snif..I will have to wait in January when other tourists are afraid of the cold and I go to New York where it is warmer than my home town! I will relieve my addiction by coming here instead of being there in person;)
It is a good thing that so many hotels are going up in New York...if the offer goes up quicker than the demand, maybe the prices will go down?
A girl can dream......
Affinia.com has a special if you book on Aug. 8, you get a Sunday night stay for $88 thru next March. It%26#39;s a promo called Lucky 8.
Millenium B%26#39;way has Sept 1,2 for $199....I think there may still be some Labor Day specials to come.
I%26#39;m still looking at $169.00 at Nu Hotel in Brooklyn on travelzoo.

I%26#39;m really not sure where people get the impression that high prices at the Holiday Inn equal a benefit to the NYC economy, yet this sentiment appears over and over.
People aren%26#39;t assuming that high prices per se are a benefit to the local economy. They are assuming, however, that high prices are a reflection of high demand, meaning that there are more people from other places visiting the city than there might otherwise be, and that those people are spending money not only on hotels but on meals, shopping, etc., that otherwise would%26#39;ve been spent elsewhere. They%26#39;re further assuming that increased business at the various restaurants, shops, etc., is good for the local economy. Doesn%26#39;t seem like too much of a stretch to me.
