I am taking my 21yr old neice to NYC for her bday. I know we%26#39;ll deviate from the plan, but I like having a plan. :) Sat %26amp; Sun will be busy days, but we%26#39;re young (I%26#39;m 33.) I plan to walk as much possible (it%26#39;s the only way to see the city) but am curious about my timelines.
Sat: if we spend a total of 3-3.5hrs at museums will we make it to the Radio City tour @ 3pm (I doubt it.) Should I push dinner back as well? Not touring UN, but will go by.
Sun: I listed streets and have the ';route'; highlighted on a google map. Is there a better way? I would%26#39;ve worked our way down to WTC, but we want to shop and will have bags. Schillers sounds like a neat place, but open to ideas. I strolling St Marks really worth it? She does like vintage (college cheap vintage.) I%26#39;d like to see the area, but will we have time?

Leaving on Fri for NYC!! Quick ? about itinerary
A few things:
On Saturday I think you mean THe Metropolitan Museum and not MOMA, two different animals.
Personally, I would spend my time outside in Central Park, the weather report looks great for this weekend, but that is up to you.
The UN is not on 5th Avenue but on 1st Avenue.
Sunday - be aware that stores open a bit later on Sunday - you plan to do all of this and make a 3 PM tour? I wouldn%26#39;t burden myself with that hanging over my head, just enjoy your shopping and exploring.
I think leaving at 2:45 is too late to leave for a 4:30 flight, I would leave a bit earlier.
Leaving on Fri for NYC!! Quick ? about itinerary
You are a great aunt! I think you%26#39;ll have a great time. but pace yourselves! I%26#39;m sure you will both be back soon to finish that ';unfinished business'; list you will inevitably be writing.
Second - I strongly recommend you get a book like Not For Tourists or Manhattan Street-by-Street when you get here. I love the NFT books, and they are indispensable for finding bus lines, coffee bars, ATMS - basically, everything except restrooms. Register for free and you can print out ALL their mapsfor free, but I%26#39;d buy one if I were you.
www.notfortourists.com/newyork.aspx
Are you staying in East Midtown? There%26#39;s a Barnes %26amp; Nobles on 3rd Avenue and E. 53rd Street.
Some thoughts:
- Why not go to TOTR and NBC store on Friday, since you mention you%26#39;re going to walk by Rockefeller Center anyway?
And when do you get here on Friday? Is it possible to take the RCMH tour then?
- Just want to warn you that Broadway in Soho is a complete and utter mob scene of shoppers on the weekends. Oy. I made that mistake last month. You may catch a break since it%26#39;s August, and people are away for vacation (well, at least I can tell the difference...) Anyway, I realize you don%26#39;t have much flexibility, but just trying to give you more realistic expectations.
- Why EJ%26#39;s? Not that it%26#39;s bad or anything, but Sarabeth%26#39;s is better. Are you looking for a diner?
- Not sure if this is good news or bad news, but also on Broadway on the UWS are Loehmann%26#39;s, Fileene%26#39;s Basement, DSW and other places to shop. Don%26#39;t forget a stop in Zabar%26#39;s!
- If you%26#39;re pressed for time or if your feet hurt, take a crosstown bus (M86, M79, etc.) through Central Park. You won%26#39;t really see too much of the park (the bus lanes are below grade), but it might take the pressure off.
- Guggenheim AND the Met is ambitious! Hey, go for it, but don%26#39;t strain yourselves. Maybe limit yourselves to one or two galleries in the Met (e.g. Greek and Roman and the Impressionists) Remember - the Met is always pay-what-you-wish. The Gugg is always full price.
- If you go back into Central Park, the rink is converted to a small amusement park for the summer ';Victorian Gardens.';
- If you%26#39;re having a steak dinner on Sat. night, reconsider lunch at Carnegie Deli. You won%26#39;t be hungry until 10 pm, and you%26#39;ll need to have your cholesterol checked.
If deli meat is your goal, go to Katz%26#39;s on Sunday while you%26#39;re on the LES, instead of Schiller%26#39;s.
- If you only want to see the outside of the UN, you can take a bus there (M42 or M104).
www.hopstop.com
- Saturday%26#39;s dinner and drinks sounds great, but how about taking a cab crosstown to St. Mark%26#39;s Place afterwards so the neice can look around?
You should DEF go to The Dessert Truck (on northwest corner of St. Marks%26#39; and 3rd Avenue) for a late night sugar fix! Yum!
http://www.desserttruck.com/
If you%26#39;re too tired to go with her, let her loose! I%26#39;m sure she can handle it. She can always take a cab back to the hotel. You have cell phones?
- Sunday morning, I would adjust that wake-up call!
- The #6 doesn%26#39;t go to Chambers Street. It goes to Brooklyn Bridge (which, true, is geographically on Chambers Street, but I don%26#39;t think that%26#39;s the station you want.) But, you could take the #4 or #5 to Fulton Street, just a 2 minute walk from the WTC.
I just added subway directions to this page on the WTC:
tripadvisor.com/Travel-g60763-d219309/New-Yo鈥?/a>
- Again, if you don%26#39;t want to walk so much, you can catch the M103 in front of J%26amp;R Electronics directly up through Chinatown (great sightseeing) to the LES. You can disembark at Grand Street, walk west to B%26#39;way and start shopping and walk north.
If you%26#39;re walking south to north, first comes Chinatown, then the LES, then Soho.
- And don%26#39;t forget to bring a shady hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and water. Nothing wrong with buying a wheelie-cart or ';shopping bag on wheels'; in Chinatown to help you schlep!
Walking around and shopping in the summer is HOT!
Thanks to you both! I%26#39;ll change my car p/u to 2:30 instead of 2:45.
I%26#39;ll look for a NFT book, that will be a big help.
Thank you for the heads up re: shopping. I was curious how bad it%26#39;d be. We want to hit H%26amp;M, but other than that are open. I%26#39;ll look up info for Zabar%26#39;s.
I chose EJ%26#39;s simply for location. Is Sarabeth%26#39;s nearby? I did want a diner so we could have a big bkfast before walking Central Park. I%26#39;ll prob just do the Met instead of trying to do both.
We%26#39;ll forgo Carnegie and do Katz instead of Schiller%26#39;s - just wanted to do a NYC deli sandwich, but even that isn%26#39;t set in stone.
Thank you for the scoop on The Dessert Truck. I am a sweets fanatic. :)
You mentioned adjust the Sunday morning wake up call - earlier or later?
One last item: Public, any insider info I need to know? I anticipate a wait (not unusual in Dallas), but was just curious if there%26#39;s was anything I should be aware of.
Thanks again for all of your help!!! I really appreciate it!
-Crystal
Chinatown is a lot of fun. It would be a great NYC experience to eat a late lunch in Chinatown, and then walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and enjoy sunset on the Brooklyn Heights Promenade. This is the picture postcard view of NYC.
You set out an ambitious schedule for yourselves. Don%26#39;t forget to just take time to wander around nabes like Greenwich Village or Soho.
Hope you enjoy your stay in NYC
';You mentioned adjust the Sunday morning wake up call - earlier or later?';
LOL, I meant later, esp if you%26#39;re going to explore St. Mark%26#39;s Place and party all night. Just walking around is fun, but would you like any late-night alternative performance recos? E.g. Bowery Poetry Club and Nuyorican Poetry Cafe have a lot of spoken-word, experimental, indy artists, etc. Very ';boho';.

For your sweet tooth, you MUST go to Economy Candy on the LES. It is awesome and the prices are great.
www.economycandy.com
I was hoping you meant later. :) I am going to need a morning to sleep in.
Thank you for the poet spots. Do you have a recommendation for live music? She and I love rock %26amp; roll of the classic nature, U2, Radio head . . just not the pop rock that%26#39;s mostly out now.
I thought it might be cool to stop in a dark, groovy bar, listen to local music and have some drinks.
Also, w/respect to Public (and Dylan Prime for that matter) what is the attire? Sassy dress w/heels, skinny pants and cute top?
Good places for live music are 鈥itysearch.com/profile/11349432/new_york_ny鈥?/a>
or 鈥itysearch.com/profile/鈥he_living_room.html
some good sites for info are www.menupages.com and www.cityseearch.com
sorry,
http://newyork.citysearch.com/
I don%26#39;t know anything about lines or dress at Public or Dylan Prime, but what you described sounds right.
Re: live music and rock bands. Go directly to Bleecker Street (don%26#39;t forget the %26#39;c%26#39;), bwn B%26#39;way and 6th Avenue. Lots of bars there. Check out:
The Red Lion
Kenny%26#39;s Castaways
The Back Fence
Terra Blues
Big NYU crowd, plus young working cogs reliving their college days. Any regulars will give you recos.
';Do you have a recommendation for live music? She and I love rock %26amp; roll of the classic nature, U2, Radio head . . just not the pop rock that%26#39;s mostly out now.';
If you have the $$, I think I may have just changed your Sunday plans:

In any case, ohmyrockness.com is a great website for finding rock music.
