I dont know much about Baseball but am planning to see one in NY. What I dont get is why there seem to be so many consecutive games. Do they play 7 games in a row???
Why so many Baseball games?
They play 162 games in a season, so yes, there are long stretches of consecutive games.
Why so many Baseball games?
The answer to why? $$$
When a player gets paid $17,000,000 per year to play baseball, the team has to bring in revenue somehow. Part of it comes from ticket sales, part from merchandising, part from concession sales, part from advertising, and part from TV revenue (and the more games to broadcast, the more money).
The season runs April through September with playoffs in October. With 162 games that leaves very few days that there isn%26#39;t a game. Sometime they even play two games on the same day, its called a double header. The Yankees are in the middle of a 20 game consecutive streak right now.
The suggest the season is so long because of players%26#39; salaries is off-base.
In 1904, the season lasted 154 games, and over the past 104 years, the season has increased by a total of 8 games. Thus, one can hardly attribute the total games to today%26#39;s exorbitant salaries.
That said, there have been plenty of changes over more recent years due to greed - the addition of a Wild Card team to the playoffs, to lengthen the post-season (which I personally like), and the increasing amount of night games, and very late night playoff games (which I hate).
One reason that there are so many baseball games per season as opposed to football---baseball isn%26#39;t as rough on the body (well...except for pitchers) as football is. Football players need time to recuperate as it is a very rough contact type of game. Baseball pitchers need lots of rest between pitching outings so they don%26#39;t do serious damage to their pitching arms.
As ex-Oriole Manager Earl Weaver said - This ain%26#39;t a football game, we do this every day.
You are correct in that the ORIGINAL reason for the long baseball season is not because of player salaries. However, the game has changed significantly in the past 20 years.
There had been talk of cutting back on the length of the season but the most compelling argument against that has been the revenue stream. Additionally, one of the main reasons that we no longer have traditional doubleheaders is somewhat due to revenue. I recall traditional doubleheaders on many holidays and after many rain outs. Most doubleheaders these days are now day-night doubleheaders. In other words, after they play one game, they clear out the stadium and several hours later, play the second game with a whole new set of tickets. Therefore, revenue does play a significant role in the length of the season as income from the gate has played more and more of a role in funding the team (i.e. player salaries).
Frankly, I%26#39;m surprised they haven%26#39;t gone to personal seat licenses for the new NY ballparks like the football Giants/Jets have.
