How safe is it to walk from Penn Station to Ferry Terminal late afternoon on a weekday?
39th street ferry terminal
You will be happy to learn that unlike the violent, crime-prone cities in your own home state, where apparently (based on the fact that the question occurred to you) one has to worry about walking city streets in broad daylight, New York City has relatively little crime. It will be quite safe for you to take this walk not only in broad daylight on streets thronged with pedestrians (which is what you are asking about), but even after the sun goes down. That being said, the area, while safe, is more than a little industrial and gritty (that is, while safe, it is not interesting or pretty), and the walk will be about a mile.

Reading about the crime in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach County where people are murdered in their homes on a regular basis and where the teens beat homeless people to death for sport, we%26#39;re proud to live in a cleaner safer place.
Unlike Miami where visitors are ';prey,'; we treat our guests with respect. Very very few visitors leave with anything less than great memories. We are one of the safest cities in America (by far)
You may wish to exit Penn Station at 33rd Street and 8th Avenue. You may finding walking west to the Hudson River along 34th Street most pleasant, it is the busiest street. Once you get to the river you%26#39;ll enjoy the pedestrian / jogging / bike path and you%26#39;ll stroll the remaining 1/4 mile to the ferry terminal. It should be a twenty minute walk.
Enjoy.
