Vintage Shopping

Taking my 17 year old daughter to NYC for a week of dancing, theatre and shopping. She%26#39;s interested in ';vintage'; clothing. Any suggestions? We will mostly be in the theatre district and Fifth Ave shopping area, but are willing to travel anywhere the subway will take us.

Thanks.

I would just have them hold the tickets at Will Call and pick them up when you get to NYC. :o)

The mezzanine is toward the back of the theater. It%26#39;s kind of late to get Wicked tickets because they are normally sold out. So, if you can get them, I would take them. :o)

Commute to NYC from Long Island City. Advice needed please.

I%26#39;m staying at the Days Inn in Long Island City for the first leg of my trip to NYC for four night.

I just wanted to know how long the commute to NYC would be... for example to the following...

    Fifth Avenue shopping...

    Times Square...

    Central Park...

    Bloomingdales...

    Barneys (Madison Avenue)...

I think the nearest station to the hotel is 33rd St Station.

How regular are trains to this station plus what is the last train? Are they safe at night?

Sorry for all the questions, but I am just absolutely clueless.

Commute to NYC from Long Island City. Advice needed please.

Would it be better for me to just get the cab to and from the city and only use the subway when acutally in NYC?

My main concern is after a hard days shopping/sight seeing I may want to chill back at the hotel for couple of hours before going back for some dinner?

    ';Would it be better for me to just get the cab to and from the city and only use the subway when acutally in NYC?';

    Check your geography- Long Island City is IN NYC. The subway runs throughout NYC. All of this is ';the city.';

Also check your map- you are only listing locations in midtown Manhattan which are all very near Long Island City. Your commute to any of these places is not likely to take more than 15-20 minutes at the very most.

If you want to stop being clueless, pick up a guidebook and read it. I understand that you%26#39;re new to the situation, but it%26#39;s not difficult to learn.

The subways run 24-7-365 and are about 98% safe. Sunnyside is a busy residential neighborhood, and you should consider exploring it.

To measure distances and commuting time, you can use:

    www.hopstop.com

    and

www.maps.google.com (and you cna use the ';find nearby'; feature.

The #7 goes directly to Times Square, and that would take about 20 minutes. Going home and going back out at night is pretty typical in NYC, so you won%26#39;t be the only one doing that by far.

If you type ';Sunnyside'; in the search box, you%26#39;ll get lots of previous threads on the area.

Asking about the commute from Long Island City to New York City is very much like asking about the commute from Hulme to Manchester. You might find looking at a map to be helpful.

Once you board the #7 train at Rawson Street (also known as 33rd Street) station in Long Island City (and this really is Long Island City, and not Sunnyside), it is a ten minute ride to Grand Central Terminal, and a thirteen minute ride to Times Square.

As even the most basic research would have told you, there is no such thing as a ';last train'; on the New York City subway, and yes they are safe at night.

The schedule can be found here:

    www.mta.info/nyct/service/pdf/t7cur.pdf

    hopstop.com

will give you estimated time for travel between various points and also estimate a taxi fare. I wouldn%26#39;t depend on taxis b/c you may not find taxis cruising in LIC. I also worry about your expectations of LIC when you%26#39;re talking about shopping at Barney%26#39;s. LIC is an industrial area that%26#39;s slowly getting gentrified. There are no photos that I can find online of your hotel, but if you go to

    maps.google.com

and plot it on the map and get a street view, you will see the building. You are across from an elevated train track.

You really need to look at a map. Some how you actually got a well located hotel in NYC (the borough of Queens, but that is part of NYC) close to a subway, how, considering your comments, is something of a mystery.

jl - based on this query and your other posts - you really need to get a GUIDEBOK and MAP of NYC and its environs; plus searching this Forum, FAQ%26#39;s etc will be most helpful to you.

PLEASE do some basic research, find out where you will be staying in relation to other activities in whcih you are interested - this is not rocket science, well, to some it isn%26#39;t.

And my esteemed colleague, BobbyC is correct, how you got such a conveniently located hotel is the mystery of the week.

Why would you guys pile on this poster with cracks like this?

Thanks for the replies. Yes, maybe I should have done a bit more reading before posting, as even i even found on wikipedia that subways are 24hr... silly me.

The reason why I was a little concerned about commuting time is because using hopstop.com it estimated journey time to Times Sq for example to be around half hour or fifth avenue about 40mins.

But then again im assuming alot of this time is including the walking and waiting for the train times.

As said, I have seen a few videos on youtube and pics on google of LIC and it%26#39;s not really a place I%26#39;d like to spend much time in... so most of my time will be spent going back and forth to Manhatten.

Daytime sight-seeing and shopping, then back to the hotel for a little rest before setting out again for dinner or a show, and my main concern was whether this was viable with the commute time. But thanks to some of the replies on here, it doesn%26#39;t seem too bad.

One more thing though if you don%26#39;t mind, I was looking on googlemaps, are there seperate entrances/exits for trains going downtown/uptown on Rawson St station?

    What's on in November??

Just wondering if anyone knows of any concerts or festivals or anything cool on in November?

My husband and I will be in NYC from Nov 5th-11th and would love to catch some live music while we%26#39;re there. Are there any decent bands playing during that time? We%26#39;re mainly into rock - not so big on r%26amp;b or pop. Also like a bit of jazz :)

Also - would love to go to some kind of sports event while there. My husband would have loved to see a baseball game while there, but I don%26#39;t especially like our chances of that in Nov - would Ice Hockey be the way to go?

Thanks a million - any suggestions will be greatly appreciated :)

    What's on in November??

    November highlights include:

    New York City Marathon

    New York Comedy Festival

    Chocolate Show

    New York Culinary Festival

    Macy%26#39;s Thanksgiving Day Parade

    Veterans Day Parade

    Holiday Windows on Fifth Avenue

    Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting

Not sure on the sporting events when American season run to and from but I%26#39;d imagine there%26#39;ll be something to see!

    What's on in November??

basketball season will have started by november,

new york knicks at madison square garden

Nov. 7 - Radio City Christmas Spectacular begins performances for the season (through Dec. 30)

Nov 8 - “Shrek: The Musical” begins previews on Broadway (opening night: Dec. 14; open-ended run)

Nov. 13 - Opening night on Broadway for Billy Elliott

    ohmyrockness.com

is a website for rock venues. It may be a bit early for Nov. show listings. This is another website I found recently for live music, but it only lists a month or 2 at a time.

nywhiz - that ohmyrockness site is a cracker! Exactly what I was after, thanks heaps! :)

Anyone got any tips on ice hockey? Is it good fun to watch? What%26#39;s the best way to get tickets?

Thanks for all your replies so far, you guys are a great help.

    Hotel prices this summer???

I went to New York at the beginning of July during the 4th of July weekend and got an excellent deal on Quikbook. I usually see specials on Travelzoo during summer time that are excellent but I can%26#39;t seem to fing great specials ever since 4th of July weekend. Are there more activities this summer in New York than usual? I was hoping that New York experts could answer this question for me.

I would have maybe gone back in August if I had found a great special like I did a month ago (134$ per night at the 6 Columbus hotel) but everything is 250$. Even Hotwire is more expensive than usual. Curiosity is therefore killing me and I was wondering why that was. I would have thought that with the high gas prices that there would have been less tourists going to NY, and everywhere else, but it seems that this is not the case.

Thanks in advance if you have an answer for me!

    Hotel prices this summer???

    ';...why that was...';

The continued depression of the US dollar has made the US and NYC in particular an extremely CHEAP destination for all Europeans, Canadians, even Australians. August is the height of vacation time for the UK and Europe. In the past, they stayed in Europe. Now they come here.

You ought to be glad that you%26#39;re not gettin a room in Moscow. Take a look at this article in today%26#39;s Wall street Journal about hotel rates in Moscow. In the same artcile they list the most expensive one night hotel rates around the world. New york City ranks second with an average rate of $384 a night. Moscow was first at $540 followed by NYC ..... followed by Paris, Dubai, Milan, Stockholm, Mumbai, Banglore, Hong Kong and rounded out by London at a relatively cheap $305 dollars a night.

    I LOVE NEW YORK !!!!!!!

Thanks nywhiz for that article! It may be a good thing for the New York economy but a bad thing for my addiction to New York because I won%26#39;t be able to satisfy it with those hotel prices this month..snif..snif..I will have to wait in January when other tourists are afraid of the cold and I go to New York where it is warmer than my home town! I will relieve my addiction by coming here instead of being there in person;)

It is a good thing that so many hotels are going up in New York...if the offer goes up quicker than the demand, maybe the prices will go down?

    A girl can dream......

Affinia.com has a special if you book on Aug. 8, you get a Sunday night stay for $88 thru next March. It%26#39;s a promo called Lucky 8.

Millenium B%26#39;way has Sept 1,2 for $199....I think there may still be some Labor Day specials to come.

I%26#39;m still looking at $169.00 at Nu Hotel in Brooklyn on travelzoo.

    ';It may be a good thing for the New York economy but a bad thing for my addiction to New York because I won%26#39;t be able to satisfy it with those hotel prices this month..snif..snif..';

I%26#39;m really not sure where people get the impression that high prices at the Holiday Inn equal a benefit to the NYC economy, yet this sentiment appears over and over.

People aren%26#39;t assuming that high prices per se are a benefit to the local economy. They are assuming, however, that high prices are a reflection of high demand, meaning that there are more people from other places visiting the city than there might otherwise be, and that those people are spending money not only on hotels but on meals, shopping, etc., that otherwise would%26#39;ve been spent elsewhere. They%26#39;re further assuming that increased business at the various restaurants, shops, etc., is good for the local economy. Doesn%26#39;t seem like too much of a stretch to me.
