Kindess of strangers - with supervisor's approval

So, I did a major face-plant yesterday afternoon and twisted my ankle while crossing the street. I%26#39;m home today with a bruised and painful left foot, propped up with ice.

I experienced some classic examples of good samaritan help, New York Style!

I fell in a weird pothole while crossing Broadway near Bowling Green on my way back to my office. The light was changing and cars were coming at me, so I think my rush to get up and run to the other side really did me in.

I sat on a curb screaming and cursing bloody murder while being observed by two finance-type guys on a cigarette break, standing right above me.

Since I was so fascinating to them, I pointed to one and said, ';Hey man, I%26#39;m in a lot of pain, how about you go getting me some ice, please?';

';Ice?';

';Yeah, ice.';

';Hm. What happened?';

';I fell while crossing the street and twisted my ankle, so right now I%26#39;m looking for a nice person to help me and get me some ice.';

';Well, where would I get ice?';

';How about that Starbucks behind you, or that vendor?';

';Um, ok.'; - ambles over to food vendor, gets handful of ice.

';Thanks, I really appreciate it.';

After a minute or so, he and his buddy still smoking and staring at me and watching me not get up, same guy says, ';Um, do you want me to get the security guard for a first aid kit?';

';No that%26#39;s ok, thanks, all I wanted was some ice.';

He goes to get security guard anyway.

';Sorry, the security guard said that since you%26#39;re sitting on the curb out here, you know, he can%26#39;t do anything, but if you were in the building, I don%26#39;t know, maybe. Ugh, don%26#39;t get me started on this guy and the rules! Ridiculous!';

Um, like I care.

Anyway, I thanked him again, hobbled over to another hot dog vendor for more ice (who was a sweetheart and wrapped it in foil in a good shape) and I hobbled over to a bench in Bowling Green.

I flagged down a Downtown Alliance security guard, explained, and asked to use her cell phone (my battery had run out). She radioed her supervisor to check.

In a few minutes, Madam Supervisor drove around and let me use her cell phone numerous times and asked me if I needed an ambulance, anything else, etc. Very nice woman.

Someone from my office was able to walk down with my briefcase and waited until I got a car service.

BTW, I had a lovely time watching all the tourists take photos at the rear of The Charging Bull statue (man, the city could make so much money if they charged for that!)

So, the moral is, maybe we are nicer ';since Sept. 11th'; and all, but we still can%26#39;t shake that bureaucracy!!

Have not heard the term ';face-plant'; QB but I hope yours didn%26#39;t get damaged! So sorry to hear about your fall. Hope you recover quickly.

That%26#39;s a story and a half! I could see that happening here too very easily.

Hope you heal fast and the ankle isn%26#39;t giving you too much trouble, a call to the OH for chicken soup is in order I think.

Hmmmm ..... let%26#39;s see now .... it%26#39;s gorgeous out today ..... start of what%26#39;s supposed to be a gorgeous weekend ..... yeah ..... twisted ankle QB ..... okay I%26#39;m buying it as long as your boss is buying it too. Good thing you didn%26#39;t twist that ankle on a rainy Tuesday ..... right. I usually just fake a cold ..... ** cough ** ..... ** cough ** .... cause it%26#39;s also contagious and then no one wants you to be around anyway.

Anyway, see everybody ..... New Yorkers can be %26#39;cool%26#39; in a time of crisis. Your story reminds me of an Op-Ed article I read a couple of weeks ago in the New York Times. A woman was struck by a car on Spring Street and she marveled at all the New Yorkers who stopped to help her. Let%26#39;s see now ..... woman struck by a car ..... and look who I%26#39;m chatting up ..... Queensboulevard ..... ironic .... just coincidence? Maybe.

Awww, poor QB LOL. Hope you get better soon. Thank goodness you weren%26#39;t hurt more seriously. In the meantime, while recuperating, you%26#39;ll have more time to answer all the interesting questions on here!
