NYC hostels - am I mad?

Hi, a question here for a friend.

She%26#39;s thinking of staying in a hostel instead of a hotel or apartment in NYC and she%26#39;s wondering if anyone has any suggestions for somewhere that you%26#39;ve stayed or someone you know has stayed? She needs somewhere:

- safe i.e. not somewhere where homeless people stay

- clean

- not expensive

- double or single rooms

- shared bathroom is ok

- in Manhatten preferably but up to a 20 minute cab ride at night is ok

- funky

- good service

- kitchen not necessary

Any suggestions? Thank you so much in advance.

Go to hostels.com or hostelz.com and read reviews. If she is travelling by herself, it%26#39;s a good way to meet fellow travelers

This place is in a really good neighborhood.

Everyone here talks about the Leo House. You could look at the threads where posters talk about it.

She is not mad. Staying in a private room in a hostel is really no different than some of the hotels that just have shared bathroom.

larchmonthotel.com

is one such hotel and it%26#39;s good in Greenwich Village.

As for ';funky'; some people would consider the Gershwin hotel funky. I think it%26#39;s just very small rooms in a not very nice place.

There are women%26#39;s residences that are quite inexpensive that also include some meals. The Brandon is one such place. Agree Leo house is also a very good idea.

hostelz.com

has a search engine that lets you look for private hostel rooms by date.

Thanks a lot folks, that%26#39;s really helpful, will pass it all on.
