Airport to Midtown (and back) with LOTS of luggage!

Hi all!

Can anyone advise me as to cost-effective AND sensible options available to 2 adults and 2 children with quite alot of luggage (at least 4 heavyish suitcases!) transfering from LGA to midtown and then from midtown hotel to JFK a couple of days later?

From what I%26#39;ve read, I think that 2 separate taxis may be our only option but perhaps I%26#39;ve overlooked something.

(Larger van-type taxis?

Shuttle service that may be able to transfer us as a single unit without costing too much more than two taxis?)

Thanks in Advance,

CP

A minivan taxi should be big enough, when you get to the head of the line tell the dispatcher and move aside, he will put you in the next one that comes.

You do NOT need two taxis. A regular sedan taxi will fit four people without any problem, especially if two are children, and the trunks are huge, so you shouldn%26#39;t have a problem with the suitcases. (You mean four suitcases total, right? Not four per person?) If you do encounter problems, you can just wait at the taxi stand for a minivan taxi.

With a group that size, including kids, I wouldn%26#39;t consider a shuttle for a moment--way too much hassle, not a direct route, more money, etc.

I don%26#39;t agree on the above shuttles where you share with other people. From the airport, you can find minivan taxis that hold more and you should have no problem fitting your family unless you%26#39;re all unusually tall or large. One of you alert the dispatcher at the front of the line that you need a larger cab. (Do NOT accept a ride from anyone who approaches you, regardless of what they offer). It may take longer, but you can also find a minivan taxi in NYC to go back to the airport. To/from JFK it%26#39;s a fixed fare of $45 plus toll and tip or ~$60 total.

If you want to be sure of extra space and don%26#39;t mind a splurge

is very good and has stretch limos.

Thanks to all that replied...and so quickly!!

Don%26#39;t think that a regular sedan taxi will be able to accomodate all four of us (kids are 11 yo) and the 4 (maybe more!) pieces of luggage but will see when we arrive I suppose.

Taxi vans look to be the way to go. By your responses I gather that they are pretty easy to come by, right?

There%26#39;s no per item charge for the baggage is there?

With regards to return journey from midtown to JFK: who do I call to order a taxi van? Are there different taxi services or the one central number?

Do I pay for tolls as we arrive at them or do I just settle up with the driver at journey%26#39;s end? How much are the tolls? I assume there%26#39;s more than one way to get to the airport and that each way has different tolls?

As for LGA to midtown: is there a flat fare there as well, or is it by the meter? Are tolls involved in this journey as well?

Thanks again!

You do not order taxis in New York; you hail them in the street just like in the movies.

If you want to order a car, that%26#39;s called a ';car service,'; and there are several competing companies. Your hotel concierge can recommend one and make the reservation for you if that%26#39;s what you decide.

No, there is no charge for baggage.

Any tolls will be incorporated into the total fare at the end. There are multiple ways to come into Manhattan from LGA, but it%26#39;s best to leave that up to the driver, since he (and it%26#39;s almost always a he) will have the most up-to-date info about traffic conditions, etc.

From LGA to Midtown is on the meter. Expect to pay $30-$40.

Appreciate the input!

Is it also a fixed $45 from a JFK hotel to Manhattan? I%26#39;m arriving in NY on a Saturday and the cruise terminal is in Manhattan (I think). I%26#39;m just going stay by the airport Sat night since I arrive in the evening and take a cab to the terminal the next day.

The $45 fixed fare is I believe just from the airport. Perhaps the hotel will have a shuttle you can take back to a terminal where you can pick up a cab...or stay in Manhattan the first night and save the effort.
