Or am I crazy?? We will be stopping overnight in Secaucus on a Sunday, arriving around 8-9 pm. We have all been to NYC before, but never at night. I was thinking we could check in and drive over and see some of the sights by night - just to take in the whole NYC in lights. Is this an insane idea? Will taxi drivers run us off the road?
I am mainly thinking about driving only, not trying to park anywhere (but then again finding a restaurant and getting a late dinner might be appealing). Will it be possible to find parking? Also thinking mainly of lower Manhattan near the 911 memorial and seeing the Statue of Liberty.
We plan to come back on Monday morning (park at Port Authority) and do a few things in the daylight before we head home to end our vacation.
Thanks for any insight!!
Can I drive around the city on Sunday nite?
The idea of just driving around is not a good one. It%26#39;s not just the driving, but the fact that you won%26#39;t see much from your car and you%26#39;ll have to keep moving. You can certainly drive in and park, then walk around or have dinner. But then if you plan on coming back on Mon. morning, why the devil not stay in Manhattan and save yourself a lot of lost time and aggro? The Travel Inn is the one hotel in Manhattan with free parking and the Skyline has $10/night parking. Both are well located for tourist stuff.
There are garages all over the city.

will show you where they all here.

While driving is usually not fun in Manhattan, Sunday night is probably one of your best options to do it. You%26#39;ll likely have the least amount of traffic/annoyances then on other days of the week.
Can you? Yes. Should you? No. Take NyWhiz%26#39;s advice. If you attempt this, all you%26#39;ll get is stress and no feel at all for NYC. Park and walk.
If you do decide to drive, and sunday night is the OK for that, remember that you CAN NOT make right turns on red anywhere in New York City. Saw a texas car get a ticket for that yesterday.
NYC streets are very narrow, and the buildings are tall and dense- you won%26#39;t see anything from the road.
The view of the skyline at night from NJ can be very nice. Why not just go to a restaurant there?
Also, it%26#39;s worth pointing out that there is no such thing as the ';911 memorial.'; Any memorial is years and years and millions of dollars away from being built.
Thank you everyone! Especially Al-NYC - would not have know about no turn on red! I did try to find hotels in town and the prices were insane. Since we are stopping on our home from Maine, and it will be the end of vaca, I didnt want to spend $200+ for a hotel. The Red Roof Inn is only $98 and gets decent reviews.
I COULD look at the city from NJ, but I don%26#39;t think it would be the same as being there at night.
I will talk it over with DH and decide what to do. We can always try the driving around, and if we get frustrated just stop at a garage and walk around. I will print that garage info.
Thanks again!
If you decide to see the City at night by car, Sunday night is a good time to be driving around. I frequently take visiting family on a Sunday evening auto tour at Christmas time when there are even more lights.
Also, on Sunday night it will be fairly easy to find parking on the street in midtown side streets in the east 40%26#39;s and 50%26#39;s. I%26#39;m not sure whether or not street parking is still free on Sunday; be prepared with lots of quarters to pay for the muni-meters, since you get only about 10 minutes for each quarter.
The best mid-town night lights will be on Fifth Avenue, from Central Park South down to the Empire State Building at 34th Street, and in Times Square. The Empire State Building%26#39;s observatory deck is open until 2 am, so you might want to park and make the ascent. Also, Times Square is much better seen on foot rather than from a car in traffic, so that would be another place to plan a stop.
The financial district of Lower Manhattan will be very lonely. You certainly can drive by the WTC and get out to look around. Your best bet for the Statue of Liberty is to find a garage (or a rare parking spot) in Battery Park City. Walk the promenade for views over the Hudson to the Statue.
Driving in NYC is actually extremely easy because, except for the lower part of the island, the streets are laid out on a logical grid.
CAUTION: DO NOT TURN RIGHT ON RED. PAY ATTENTION TO ';ONE WAY'; SIGNS.
Also, if you are not familiar with driving in NYC, study a good map to plan your route in advance. You can get maps that indicate garage locations - very useful.
';Driving in NYC is actually extremely easy..'; LOL yea - if you have demolition derby experience..
