Day trip from New York city

We are visiting Virginia and New York city in June 2009. Some of us have visited NY before, so this time we would like to do one or two day trips out of the city.

One trip that interested us was to West Point by ferry. I have a nywaterway leaflet from a few years ago and they did this cruise and many others, including The Rockefeller Estate and Lyndhurst. These tours do not appear to operate any more and I can%26#39;t find any alternatives.

I have searched the NY TA forum for alternatives, but much of the advise given over the last couple of years is out of date.

I would therefore appreciate any help with details of day trips from New York by ferry or guided coach to places such as West Point, Rockefeller Estate, Lyndhurst.

Hire car is not an option as there are 11 of us.

A few options to consider. In June, Fire Island is beautiful. Great restaurants in Ocean Beach. Beautiful day trip. Visit fireisland.com

The Long Island Rail Road offers summer one-day beach packages to Fire Island for $28.00 (inclusive of roundtrip rail, roundtrip very quick shuttle between the train and ferry for those who don%26#39;t want to walk the 0.9 mi, and roundtrip ferry)

Another option if you%26#39;re looking for an interesting ferry ride is the ferry from Bridgeport Connecticut to Port Jefferson NY. Metro-North to Bridgeport, ferry to Port Jefferson, a relaxing afternoon in Port Jefferson (charming town), Long Island Rail Road back to Penn Station.

Seastreak operates ferries to Sandy Hook and the Highlands area of New Jersey, great restaurants and beautiful sunsets.

You can always visit nywaterway.com and see what they have.
