Does any one know the best location or hotel (Hilton New York; off ave.of the Americans or Waldorf Astoria to choose for 1st time visit with husband and 8 yr old son. Looking for a location where we can be close enough to walk to or short cab ride to various sites around city. Which one will be better?
I realize one is more modern and one is historical, we like both. Thank you. Lisa pisa
hilton new york or waldorf astoria? The NY Hilton is a better location for typical first time tourist venues.
hilton new york or waldorf astoria? When I%26#39;m in New York with my mother, we always stay at the Waldorf. She loves the fact that it is a stop for the Hop On Hop Off tour...and walking distance to Times Sqaure.
I just stayed at the Hilton New York earlier this year and it was perfect to get to TS, 5th Ave., Central Park, and there were plenty of taxis ready to go outside. I haven%26#39;t stayed at the Astoria so I can%26#39;t say if it%26#39;s better or worse.
The Hilton is located near Rockefeller Center, which means you are closer to Times Square, Radio City Music Hall and a plethora of train stations.
The Waldorf is on Park Avenue, which is full of businesses (UBS, JPMorgan, etc all located there). You will be closer to Madison Avenue, Grand Central Station.
To be quite honest, both places are relatively close to each other, so it doesn%26#39;t make much of a difference. It would come down to whether you like historical (Waldorf) vs modern (Hilton).
The Hilton New York is a very nice hotel that is centrally located. I stayed there in the spring and must add a couple of observations. It is very much a corporate hotel. Many conferences take place in this hotel all the time. It is pretty crowded at check-in and check-out. Utilize the kiosks for speedier check-in. Here is my biggest pet peeve about this hotel, in order to store your luggage either before check-in or after check-out, they require you to pay $10.00 per bag. I have stayed in dozens of hotels in all price ranges in NYC and have never been required to pay such a fee. Also, there was always a long line waiting to drop off and pick up bags with not enough help so it took much too much time to accomplish this simple task. I realize this may seem to be a minor thing but it really bothered me. I missed a train because of how long it took to pick up my bags (25 minutes) after I paid $30.00 to store our bags! It really bothered me...
It is a clean, modern hotel. The room we stayed in appeared to have been refurbished very recently. The carpet was brand new. Again, it was great other than the above listed ';issues';. Moms
Hi Tri-Cal,
I prefer Waldorf Hotel but Hilton麓s location is better than Waldorf麓s
Now that you%26#39;ve gotten all this good info, I just have to say out of the hundreds of hotels in NYC, neither of these are what I%26#39;d pick for a first time visit with an 8 yr old son. There%26#39;s nothing wrong with either, but neither is ideal. The Waldorf is too old fashioned imo for an 8 yr old in the basic rooms and the location is not terribly convenient. The Hilton is too big and corporate although the location is ideal.
Some other places to look at:
The Courtyard Marriott Times Square or Fifth Ave.
The Affinia 50 or Affinia Dumont (suite hotels with kitchens and big rooms)
If you want something somewhat historic, check the prices of the Essex House on quikbook.com
Thank you for all your responses. I will consider your thoughts nywiz. One of the main reasons for staying in the hilton family hotels, is due to points usage and these two seemed the best. I have many points to use up and we are doing a 3 week trip starting in Maine, Boston, New York and Washington D.C. I realize there are many choices. Do you think there is a better choice in the Hilton family in New York city? They have Embassy and Doubletree and Hamton, etc. I just thought out of Hilton choices, they seemed to be the best ones to choose. My kid really appreciates historical stuff too. He went to Italy last year with us for 3 weeks and enjoyed all the atiquity. Thanks again for your imput, Lisa pisa
