From Boston to New York

I live in Madeira and I want to visit New York in February 2009. The big question is: how do I get there? :) There are no direct flights between Madeira and the US, so I%26#39;ll PROBABLY take a one-stop flight to Boston via the Azores, instead of taking a flight to Lisbon, Portugal and then Newark.

So, how do I get from Boston to New York? Where do I catch the train and what%26#39;s the best train company? How long does the journey take? How much does a two way ticket cost? Do you any websites that might be useful?

Thanks in advance, guys!

From Boston to New York

jetBlue offers cheap airfares between Boston and New York JFK Airport. That may be easiest than finding your way in to Central Boston from Boston Logan Airport.

If you do want to take the train, you only have one choice, Amtrak from South Station. amtrak.com

There are lots of buses that do the trip.

It is approximately four hours on the train. Due to traffic the bus ride can be alot longer.

I suggest checking out jetblue.com and finding yourself an inexpensive ticket from Boston to JFK. Allow at least two hours to clear customs in Boston and then get to another terminal.

I agree with that. Once you%26#39;re at the airport, it%26#39;s probably just as easy to take a flight. I wouldn%26#39;t limit yourself to Jetblue.com There are a number of airlines that fly the route. Go to

kayak.com

and put in your dates and see what prices are like. The flight is only about an hour but if you take the train or a bus it will be 4-5 hrs. The bus is probably the very cheapest. Look at

megabus.com

boltbus.com

There%26#39;s not much to see on the highway route between the 2 cities so I wouldn%26#39;t select bus for ';scenery';.

If you decide to take the train, there are several options from Amtrak. The Acela is supposed to fastest (and cost the most) but many feel it%26#39;s not worth the extra money. The regional trains are fine.

I wonder if you wouldn%26#39;t want to take a day to see some of Boston?

Great tips, thank you very much, guys!

I should add, there are 3 airports that service NYC (but only one for Boston). When checking air prices on kayak, type New York, ny and you%26#39;ll get prices/options for all 3 airports (LGA, JFK, EWR). LGA is closest but really requires a taxi while JFK and EWR are a bit further but have bus and train options into Manhattan.

I go back to Boston 4 or 5 times a year. While the Acela is expensive, I think it is far superior to the regular Amtrak service for a number of reasons. First and foremost, the quiet car.

Also, Acela is an express, and not just because it%26#39;s a high-speed train. The regular train makes too many stops along the coast in Connecticut and Rhode Island. It drives me crazy to hear them say ';next station stop in approximately 35 minutes, Bridgeport'; (or New London, or Westerly...).

If you%26#39;re not taking the Acela, the bus (which goes directly between Boston and NYC) is usually faster than the train, as well as being much less expensive.

Trains and busses both depart from South Station in Boston.

Amtrak. I would see if you can get a flght into Newark. It seems to me from your posts you allways fly into Newark. Here is the link

Megabus and boltbus are having some kind of promotional price war. My wife and I will be traveling to New York next month on Megabus for a total of $7 (sic) roundtrip (i.e. $3.50 each, round trip). I bought the tickets a couple of months ago after seeing the prices mentioned on TripAdvisor.

Thank you!
