I am looking for a hotel in Midtown preferably a suite (with kitchen) for 3 adults and one fifteen year old and need three beds (not sofa bed)so a two bedroomed suite for the period 24 Dec to 1st Jan and am looking at a budget of $5500 including taxes. Would be grateful of any help. Are the prices likely to go down nearer to Christmas?
I wouldn%26#39;t mind two adjoining rooms if a suite is too over priced. This is our first visit to new york to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary in 2009.

I don%26#39;t think the prices will go down as a rule, but you may find some specials. I think the prices go up as the date nears. You should try the Marriot Courtyard Midtown East as they have two queen bed rooms and a sofabed for very reasonable rates (you%26#39;d have to get two if you don%26#39;t want to depend on the sofabed). Also, the Affinia Manhattan has two bedroom suites, but they are around $700 to $850 a night. They also have studio suites, but the prices are higher now than a few months ago for December. I have noticed that the price of a hotel room in NYC are usually lower starting around Dec. 22 to the 26, but it seems that on the 27th of Dec all hotel rooms are much more expensive, probably due to New Years Eve.

The Blakely hotel has a 1 bedroom suite with a king bed in the bedroom and a daybed (not a sofabed) in the living that is well under your budget. It%26#39;s a lovely hotel in a central location and that suite has a small kitchen.

AKA suites has a 2 bedroom 2 bath in their Sutton Place building but it%26#39;s $5500 before taxes so quite a bit over budget after taxes. Their other properties are either not available or only have 1 bedrooms without a proper bed for teen.
The Millenium UN Plaza has some 2 bedroom suites but I can%26#39;t get their website to say whether it%26#39;s available for your dates or the price. It won%26#39;t have a kitchen.
You can try the Best Western Hospitality. They have some 2 bed/1 bath suites. Not glamorous but decent. The Kimberly is nearby and has 1 bedroom suites but their 2 bedroom is not available.
The Affinia suite hotels have a 2 bedroom at the Eastgate that fits your budget, but it%26#39;s not nearly as nice as the others mentioned here. It%26#39;s large and decent location but very tired decor.
Try the Eastgate Tower Hotel on www.affinia.com, this has 2 bedroom suites in your price range. I am also visitng new york at Christmas and I%26#39;m sure when I looked last year in September the rates were cheaper. You can always book a room which allows cancellations.
Jojonelli is correct in what she says, the week of christmas is lower priced, but jump a lot on the 26th thru the first or second or third of january (depending on when New Years day is, if it is a weekday the prices will drop on the first if it is a friday the prices will drop on the third, a saturday they will drop on the second - additionally, rates for the 31st may be higher than all others, especially clost to times sq). Generally rates for that period go UP the closer to the date, but you might find some last minute bargans for christmas week. But I would not chance it to save $200 or so max, you could end up spending hundreds more by waiting if, as usual, things start selling out.
