We are in New York October 20th and plan to visit Jones beach, we know that the bus from freeport stops in the middle of september, but how can we get to jones beach from freeport station. Will there be any cafes etc open?
Jones Beach
Jones Beach is closed at that time. The only way to go to the beach at Jones Beach is to rent a car and go to one of the outer parking lots where you can just walk onto the sand (I think). You might find a taxi at the LIRR station, but not likely.
If you just want to see the ocean, head to Long Beach on the Long Island railroad. You can walk to the beach from the train station, but you%26#39;d need to bring your own chairs or blanket to sit on the beach.
Jones Beach
Actually the public beaches never close - they may just not be as inviting as we think of them.
What is true is that the bus that runs in the summertime is no longer available. To get from the railroad to the beach I imagine you could get a cab to the beach. But I%26#39;d make sure to discuss your return with the driver before going there... because that%26#39;s probably not easily done (ie, cabs run from the station but not from anywhere else). To be clear: Make sure you have your return planned because it won%26#39;t be easily done otherwise.
Something to think about if you%26#39;re interested in dining outside and enjoying the water... Babylon is a very nice town and there a whole host of restaurants built out onto the Great South Bay. Express trains from Penn Station to Babylon take about an hour. There are taxi%26#39;s at Babylon Rail (two companies), it isn%26#39;t an expensive ride to the restaurants. You can easily walk between the restaurants. That is nice.
You can probably get a taxi from Freeport to Jones Beach but it may be kind of depressing and there won%26#39;t be anything open (no cafes or anything).
I don%26#39;t know whether any of the restaurants on Fire Island are open in October but Ocean Beach is beautiful. Check out fireisland.com, the ferries still run. The next stop after Babylon is Bay Shore, the ferries run from Bay Shore to Fire Island.
There is always the Hamptons. Things in the Hamptons are active through the end of October. Main Street in East Hampton and Amagansett are busy. You can walk along what has been voted the second most beautiful beach in the world (I don%26#39;t know what number one is but I hope it is also on Long Island).
The Long Island Rail Road is excellent. Check out the Montauk branch schedules.
Finally, Port Jefferson is a charming town on the North Shore.
Oh you are soo right, FF - Babylon is a great thought! As a North Shore, Suffolk County-bred girl, I heartily endorse your recommendation!
Really, it%26#39;s a good idea.
Good to know you agree. I%26#39;ve always enjoyed Babylon. Having such frequent local and express train service 24 hours a day is an added bonus. I didn%26#39;t think to mention this but if going to the beach is an absolute must before or after lunch / dinner, the taxi%26#39;s can take our Scottish visitors to Robert Moses.
Robert Moses isn%26#39;t significantly different than Jones Beach (minus the amphitheatre). I think it is less than $20.00 each way from Babylon Rail.
