Mets V Nationals sept 9

Gday,

Just got some tickets to the Mets V Nationals game. Not knowing alot about the teams , is this fixture of any importance ie is there a traditional rivalry between the 2 teams etc. Seeing im staying in NYC I will be barracking for a Mets win. Are their colours orange and blue ,and can you wear the teams colours in safety ie im thinking English soccer hoods!!!In australia here you can wear your colours without fear of reprisals, if you know what i mean. Catching the purple line from Manhattan i think. any info about this clash would be great

In September, the pennant races for the playoffs will be in full swing. The Mets are currently within reach of reaching the playoffs and the game in early September will likely be very important for their playoff chances. The Nationals, however, are way out of it and the game has very little consequence for them and they%26#39;ll be playing for pride only - and a chance for some september callups (minor leaguers called up in september where the roster is expanded from 25 to 40) a chance to play and show their stuff.

As for a rivalry, even though the two teams are in the same division, there really isn%26#39;t much of a fierce rivalry as far as the teams go. A player or two (Lastings Milledge for one, on the Nationals) may have a gripe about his former Mets, but that%26#39;s about it.

As for wearing Mets colors (yes, orange and blue), there should be no problem. You could even wear a Nationals jersey and shouldn%26#39;t have any trouble whatsoever (there are rare exceptions from a drunk).

Transportation wise, most NYers will know what you mean by the purple line, but it%26#39;s known as the 7 train. That is the correct route.

I had no idea what %26#39;the purple line%26#39; meant... Well, it%26#39;s early and I%26#39;m on vacation but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - you have to use letter or number to identify your subway line!

I have gotten used to people saying ';the red line'; when the mean the 1. 2 or 3, but even though I am from Flushing myself, it took me a moment to figure out what the heck ';the purple line'; meant.

Westozman, please note that there is no ';Purple Line'; on the NYC subway. Never call, or think of, subway lines by color. Ech one has its own name, which will be either a letter or a number. (They also have, for old-timers, a real name, but again it is NOT going to be a color.) The train you want is the ';7 train';. Everyone will call it the ';7 train';. You may run into old Queens residents who may also call it the ';Flushing Line';, or the ';Flushing IRT';, but NO ONE will call it the ';Purple'; train.

In American baseball (which is a happy, gentlemanly, family-oriented sport) there is absolutely nothing like British football hooliganism; you will find it more like Australia that way.

You can buy Mets shirts, caps, etc. at any branch of Modell%26#39;s.

The main Mets colors are orange and blue (which were two of the colors of the old National League teams in NYC, and are also the colors of the NYC flag...), although in recent years the Mets have added black as one of their colors.

As noted, the Nationals are not a big rival for the Mets. I suspect the team the Mets fans like least are the Atlanta Braves.

Thanks to you all for the info.Sorry about the purple line reference. I think i got it looking at a subway map but it is indeed the number 7 train. Will only be using the numbers from now on then. One more thing, what will the crowd be like as in numbers ie 40,000, 50,000. I have no idea idea what to expect and will it get get cold there in the evening.

The number of tickets sold or announced attendance will likely be in the 45,000 range or so. However, the actual number of people there that you%26#39;ll see in the stadium, depending on the weather, will be probably around 35,000 to 40,000.

In late August, during the day, it is typically anyway from 80-90 degrees F with some element of humidity. Of course, the weather can vary greatly at any time.

Oh, the evening will be a bit cooler but shouldn%26#39;t be ';cold.'; More comfortable than anything - but I guess it%26#39;s all relative depending on the individual.

Also, as the days of both Yankee and Shea Stadium will almost be down to single digits then, I%26#39;d expect more people to acutely be in attendance. The biggest problem you will have is the time it may take you to get out of the stadium as everyone must use the ramps from the upper levels at the end of the game. The crowd will have the usual few who may have had a beer or two too many, but it will be mostly families and the like.

Just be prepared for the planes from La Guardia that will be taking off right over your head if the winds are in the right direction!

As long as you don%26#39;t wear any Yankee clothing, Atlanta Braves, or Philadelphia Philly clothing you will be fine....and the rest will just get you some ribbing!
